The Great Firewall blocks Yahoo search
Netizens in China reported August 30th, 2018 that Yahoo search was no longer accessible in the country. Yahoo.com, Yahoo mail, and other services appear to still be accessible in China. The subdomain search.yahoo.com is blocked.
Yahoo search joins the list of blocked search engines alongside Google and DuckDuckGo. Bing search, operated by Microsoft, remains one of the few English-language search engines that is not blocked in China presently. However, search results on cn.bing.com are self-censored. Recently, news reports suggested Google plans to launch a self-censored version of its search engine in China.
Cause for censorship unknown
It is unclear why Yahoo search is being blocked at this time. Yahoo’s censorship comes at a time of increasing internet regulation in China. Reddit, the “front page of the internet”, was also blocked in the country earlier in August, 2018.
Yahoo, founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in 1994, was one of the earliest giant internet companies. Although its popularity has declined in recent years, as of 2018 it is still the 6th most visited website globally according to web analytics service Alexa.
